2002 Tribute Show
It's 7:00 p.m. on a Thursday in August
On August 22, 2002, the very first Layne Staley Tribute took place at the Showbox Market. It was a life-changing experience for me. People flew in from all over the world to attend. We took people who flew in to various points of interest such as The Crocodile Cafe, The Moore Theater, The Music Bank, etc. A vigil was held at the Seattle Center fountain prior to the show. A post-show event took place at the Lobo Saloon. The best part for me was that Johnny, James, and Nick from Alice N' Chains all played that night. Johnny and James with Second Coming and Nick Pollock with Soulbender.

Nancy's Speech at The Lobo Saloon 08/23/02
"Alright, its been a long few months and I've spoken with a few on other occasions. It's been many years since Layne was in my life... and I've never watched all the films in order because I was in Alaska with no cable...no MTV. So I only knew Layne as my son...and I didn't appreciate what he had done. I don't regret that I loved Layne only as my son. I loved that I knew him as that. His career didn't change our relationship. There are so many things that I could tell you. And I wondered as I was sitting a few moments ago, 'Why do I come to these events?...(because I'm old)...and does it squelch the freedom you all have to be here? What I realized a few moments ago...I'm here to be with you.. so I can be with Layne. I miss him. I've missed him for a long time. I will miss him until I am with him again...and I don't know what that looks like. And I have to live the rest of my life without him...and I don't know how that looks. The love isn't going anywhere. It's getting bigger...and I want each of you to know that I love you. And you might not see the big picture, none of us do... Every stitch in the tapestry, every little note in a song makes it what it is...and I don't want any of you to underrate who you are. We need you to stick around. And thank you for this wonderful evening...fabulous celebration."
